A fire at an Iraqi hospital treating people infected with the coronavirus has killed at least 50 people.

The fire broke out Monday night at al-Hussein Hospital, south of the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.

The hospital, which was built just three months ago, caught fire after an oxygen plant exploded, officials said.

According to the news agency AP, 70 beds of the hospital have been burnt in the fire.

Following the incident, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Qadimi ordered the hospital chief to be arrested, the BBC reported.

Relatives of the patients are protesting outside the hospital.

Protesters also burned police vehicles.
