Feeding four people for under $5 sounds like a trick, but it's very doable when the meal is built on cheap bases like rice, pasta, potatoes and beans. You won't be eating steak, but you will be eating real, filling dinners that kids tend to like.

Below are six dinners with a rough cost for the whole pan, not per person. All prices are rough estimates for US store-brand groceries in 2026, and they assume you already have basics like oil, salt and a few spices. Your total will shift with your store and region.

6 family dinners for under $5 total

How the math works

The trick is counting only what you actually use. A 5 lb bag of rice costs around $4, but two cups of it costs about 80 cents. That's why pantry-heavy meals look so cheap on paper: you're paying for a slice of each package, not the whole thing.

Ingredient Rough package price Amount used Rough cost used
Long-grain rice $4.00 / 5 lb 2 cups $0.80
Eggs $3.50 / dozen 4 $1.20
Frozen peas and carrots $1.25 / 12 oz whole bag $1.25
Onion $3.00 / 3 lb 1 $0.40
Soy sauce $2.00 / bottle 3 tbsp $0.20
Oil $4.00 / bottle 2 tbsp $0.10
Total about $3.95

That table is the egg fried rice below. For the bigger picture on cost per serving, see the complete guide to cheap dinners on a budget.

Egg fried rice for 4 people for about $4

1. Egg fried rice (about $3.95)

Day-old rice works best because it fries instead of going mushy. Cook the rice the night before, or spread fresh rice on a tray and let it cool for 30 minutes.

Ingredients: 2 cups dry rice cooked (about 6 cups cooked, cooled), 4 eggs, 1 bag frozen peas and carrots, 1 onion diced, 3 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp oil.

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in your biggest skillet over medium-high. Scramble the eggs until just set, then tip them onto a plate.
  2. Add the rest of the oil and the onion. Cook 3 minutes.
  3. Add the frozen veg and cook 3 to 4 minutes until hot.
  4. Add the rice, breaking up clumps, and fry 5 minutes, stirring now and then so some bits get crispy.
  5. Stir in the soy sauce and eggs. Taste and add more soy if needed.

2. Pasta with white bean tomato sauce (about $4.80)

Ingredients: 1 lb pasta ($1.25), 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes ($1.80), 1 can white beans, drained ($1.00), 1 onion ($0.40), 2 cloves garlic ($0.20), 1 tsp Italian seasoning, oil.

  1. Cook the pasta in salted water. Save a mug of the water before draining.
  2. Meanwhile, soften the onion in oil for 5 minutes, add the garlic and seasoning for 30 seconds.
  3. Add tomatoes and beans and simmer 10 minutes.
  4. Toss with the pasta, loosening with a splash of the pasta water.

3. Bean and cheese burritos (about $4.70)

Ingredients: 8 flour tortillas ($2.00), 1 can refried beans ($1.20), 1 cup dry rice cooked ($0.40), 1 cup shredded cheese ($0.60), half a jar of salsa ($0.50).

  1. Warm the beans in a small pan with a splash of water.
  2. Stir a few spoonfuls of salsa into the cooked rice.
  3. Fill each tortilla with beans, rice and a little cheese, then roll up.
  4. Toast seam-side down in a dry skillet for 2 minutes per side.

4. Lentil sloppy joes (about $3.60)

Ingredients: 1 cup dry brown or green lentils ($0.60), 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce ($0.80), 2 tbsp ketchup, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp mustard ($0.30 together), 1 onion ($0.40), 8 buns ($1.50).

  1. Simmer the lentils in 3 cups water for 20 to 25 minutes until tender, then drain.
  2. Soften the onion in a little oil, then add tomato sauce, ketchup, sugar and mustard.
  3. Stir in the lentils and simmer 10 minutes until thick. Pile onto buns.

5. Cheesy potato soup (about $3.80)

Ingredients: 2 1/2 lb potatoes ($2.00), 1 onion ($0.40), 2 tbsp butter ($0.30), 2 tbsp flour, 3 cups water plus 1 tbsp bouillon ($0.30), 1 1/2 cups milk ($0.40), 1/2 cup shredded cheese ($0.40).

  1. Melt the butter, soften the onion 5 minutes, then stir in the flour for 1 minute.
  2. Whisk in the water and bouillon, then add peeled, diced potatoes.
  3. Simmer 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are very soft.
  4. Mash some potatoes in the pot to thicken, stir in the milk, heat through, then add the cheese.

6. Pancakes and scrambled eggs (about $2.70)

Breakfast for dinner is a classic for a reason. Use 2 cups flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 2 tbsp sugar, 1 1/2 cups milk, 2 eggs and 2 tbsp oil for the pancakes, and scramble 4 more eggs on the side. Mix dry, mix wet, combine until just lumpy, and cook 1/4 cup scoops on a medium skillet until bubbles form, then flip.
